Norma "Duffy" Lyon, 81, of Toledo, Iowa, whose life-size butter sculptures of cows, Elvis and the Last Supper delighted Iowa state fairgoers, died June 26 of a stroke. She was pregnant with her seventh child when she produced her first cow sculpture in 1959, and she continued until 2006. She picked up her art while earning a veterinary science degree at Iowa State University and helping with her family's dairy and beef cattle operation.George C. Ballas Sr., 85, of Houston, an entrepreneur best known for inventing the Weed Eater, died June 25. He got the idea for the device, which uses spinning bristles to cut weeds, while sitting in a car wash. He worked as a teacher and troubleshooter for the Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire dance studio franchises and owned the Dance City USA Studio. He later taught at Rice University.
Peter Falk, 83, of Beverly Hills, Calif., the stage and movie actor who became identified as the rumpled detective in "Columbo" over 30 years in prime-time television, died June 23 after Alzheimer's disease. He established himself as a character actor in the film "Murder, Inc." and scored a stage hit in "The Prisoner of Second Avenue." He collected five Emmys and received two Oscar nominations.
Christiane Desroches Noblecourt, 97, of Sezanne, France, who prodded Gen. Gamal Abdel Nasser to help salvage Nubia's vaunted antiquities from the Aswan Dam, died June 23 after a stroke. She developed a passion for Egyptology after reading about King Tut's tomb and became the first woman put on stipend with the French Institute of Oriental Archaeology. Her dozens of books included "The Fabulous Heritage of Egypt."
Nick Charles, 64, of Santa Fe, N.M., a former taxi driver who became CNN's first sports anchor, died June 25 of cancer. He grew up in Chicago and landed his first new job with WICS in Springfield, Ill. He later worked at stations in Baltimore and Washington, then began at Atlanta-based CNN on the network's first day in 1980. He teamed with Fred Hickman for almost 20 years on "Sports Tonight."
Gene Colan, 84, of New York, who illustrated the adventures of comic book characters including Batman, Daredevil and Howard the Duck, died June 23 of liver disease and cancer. His art was a staple of the Silver Age era of comics, and his 70-issue run on "The Tomb of Dracula" remains critically lauded.
