Samsung PS51D8000 3D Plasma TV Review

At the end of last year, we were happy to get our hands on a review sample of a 2010 Samsung plasma TV, and jokingly mentioned that we hoped to review one of the 2011 models before they became “old news”. At Samsung, the push absolutely appears to be on its LED LCD HDTVs, with plasmas appearing to be an afterthought. Despite this, we found the company’s plasma televisions to be very likeable displays, and hoped that we’d get a chance to see more of them in the future.

Well, Samsung has listened and has sent us a PS51D8000 review sample to get stuck into. This 51-inch plasma display is 3D capable, and features a full HD 1920x1080p panel, 4 HDMI inputs, Freeview HD and Freesat HD tuners, and of course, the “Smart TV” (internet connectivity) functionalities which the Korean manufacturer is so proud of. Let’s see if the Samsung PS51D8000 can compete against the PDP (plasma display panel) competition.

Although not as stunningly designed as the PS50C6900 we reviewed back in November (which we loved thanks to its use of charcoal-coloured, non-shiny dark grey), the Samsung PS51D8000 is certainly a nicely designed HDTV. The screen is surrounded by silver metallic and transparent, glass-like acrylic, and the plasma sits on to of a four-legged chrome stand (which is a nightmare to assemble and fit to the back of the TV, especially since plasmas should never be laid flat).

It’s incredibly slim, measuring roughly 3cm at its deepest point, although Samsung have found a way to slim down the chassis (and the speakers) without sacrificing sound quality too much. The PS51D8000′s built-in speakers obviously aren’t a match for a real off-board speaker system, but through the use of EQ, they can deliver a surprisingly weighty sound (distortion can still occur during louder areas, though). This is noteworthy, because the chassis of Panasonic’s comparably priced 2011 Plasma TVs actually curves out to make room for larger speakers… which still don’t sound as good as Samsung’s.

The Samsung D8000 PDP features 4 HDMI inputs, two inputs for the terrestrial, cable and satellite tuners, and connectivity options for older analogue interfaces (SCART, Component, Composite, Computer “VGA”). There are also 2 USB inputs and an Ethernet/LAN port, although this HDTV features wireless connectivity built in, so we imagine this will go largely unused.

Panasonic ST30 is one of 3D plasma TV released by Panasonic in 2011. Panasonic ST30 is equipped with advanced features like full 1080p High Definition resolution for best image quality you can get as well as support for full 3D view so you can immerse yourself in the experience like never before. Panasonic Viera ST30 is also equipped with 600Hz subfield drive so any little movement will show up clearly, even when using 3D. Panasonic ST30 can also connect online wirelessly, allowing you to stream all sorts of content from a PC or millions of different movies and videos from places like Netflix so you do not run out of content to watch. Viera ST30 fully Energy Star certified and has 3 HDMI port for full HD and 3D connectivity. In Panasonic ST30, the contrast in bright locations has increased significantly. Enhancements to the panel and helps cells reproduce images with smooth, natural gradations and deep, rich blacks even when viewed in bright environments. In the film, the true, deep blacks faithfully conveys the intent of the filmmaker, adding strength and realism to the viewing experience. Viera ST30 Plasma TV has 1080 lines of moving-picture resolution. Developed new phosphors with minimal afterimages and motion compensation technology allows to create a new faster moving images with greater sharpness. This goes far beyond moving-picture resolution of standard 5 seconds with the APDC measurement-resolution moving images provide 1080 lines at a rate of 1.5 seconds. And it shows clearly the inherent motion of Panasonic ST30 in both 2D and 3D images. Panasonic ST30 incorporates technology that analyzes the picture information in both the preceding and following frames, and creating additional frames right between them. This press jerky effects seen in movies, so the playback is smooth and natural look. Distinctive quality of tone and atmosphere of the film is preserved, and you enjoy the 3D images are very much alive. Viera ST30 uses   Full-HD frames Sequential technology to create a 3D image. Images recorded at 1920 1080 pixels for both right eye and left eye alternately flash on the screen in an ultra high level of 120 frames per second. When you view the screen through active shutter glasses that open and close each lens in sync with the picture turns, you see a heart Full HD 3D images with amazing strength and realism. With 600Hz technology lets you see the incredible full-HD motion and still images.
