NORFOLK
Rhodonna Boyd punched her Social Security number into a laptop Thursday and waited for good news.
Christine Maldonado of the state Department of the Treasury scanned a computer set up on the first floor of City Hall, looking for customer overpayments, tax refunds, insurance claims, any amount of money that never reached Boyd.
"I have all of 28 cents from an old paycheck for you," Maldonado told her.
Boyd laughed. It was worth a shot, she said.
At the other end of the table, Virginia Beach resident Jane Bethel had a more luck. She found $25 for herself and $198, the result of an old paycheck, for her daughter.
This is the first year the Norfolk commissioner of revenue's office has hosted the Treasury event, billed as a modern-day search for missing treasure.
Commissioner of Revenue Sharon McDonald said someone in her office learned about the unclaimed property program and suggested she bring it to Norfolk. McDonald even ran her own information through the program, tracking down $18 for herself and $25 for her mother.
The Treasury Department has been holding outreach events to connect people with their unclaimed property for 50 years. Armed with laptops and Social Security numbers, Treasury employees have searched for money at public hearings, employee appreciation days, even county fairs.

Sheriff Carpenter Turns Over Unclaimed Funds to Lincoln County ...
STAFF REPORTS | LINCOLN TRIBUNE
LINCOLNTON, NC – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has turned over $15,331.75 in unclaimed cash to the Lincoln County School System.
Upon taking office, Sheriff Carpenter directed that a complete inventory be taken at the Sheriff’s Office as required by law. A large amount of cash was found in the office of the Sheriff. Following the inventory, it was determined that the money was not immediately associated with any active cases and that the money had been in the care of the Sheriff’s Office for years with no one claiming the money.
In March a property report was forwarded to the North Carolina Attorney General’s Office to get an exact ruling on how the funds should be distributed. Special Deputy Attorney General Kelly Chambers reviewed the property report and determined the money should be turned over to the Lincoln County Schools pursuant to NC General Statute Section 15-11.1.
On May 12, 2011 Resident Superior Court Judge James W. Morgan signed an order that the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office turn over all unclaimed monies to the treasurer of the Lincoln County Board of Education.
On May 19, 2011 the forfeiture in the amount of $15,331.75 was transferred from the Clerk of Court to the Lincoln County Schools by check.
Lincoln County Sheriff David Carpenter said, “We are pleased to turn these monies over to the school system. This begins a new process of how our agency deals with cash money seizures.”
He went on to say, “From this point forward cash seizures will be deposited with the Lincoln County Finance Department to relieve us from having cash monies on hand as evidence”.
