CNMI - DHS Sends Worker Regs to White House for Review
Kilili added a caution to the Department regarding its funding in the same floor speech. “As we think about funding Homeland Security today,” he said, “Homeland Security should be explaining why it isn’t doing its job issuing these long overdue regulations for the Northern Mariana Islands.” (The complete statement is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CcwZs8tY9W8.) Last year, in reply to a letter from Sablan and Senators Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) and Daniel Akaka (D-HI) and Representative Nick Rahall (D-WV), Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said she expected the regulations to be out by the first quarter of 2011. But the final day of the quarter, March 31, came and went without any sign of the regulations. Saipan, MP — Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan said today that the Department of Homeland Security has sent draft regulations for Commonwealth-only transitional workers to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review. This internal comment period is generally the last step before regulations are published for public scrutiny. Kilili added a caution to the Department regarding its funding in the same floor speech. “As we think about funding Homeland Security today,” he said, “Homeland Security should be explaining why it isn’t doing its job issuing these long overdue regulations for the Northern Mariana Islands.” (The complete statement is available at http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=CcwZs8tY9W8 .)
