Tired of staycations? Try an oblication
Contributing writerKathy Simons, Pulaski, brings her husband and daughter to a four-day conference of the software in Phoenix, Arizona this month on their way to visit his family in their native Portland, Oregon
Novelist Laurie Halse-Anderson, Mexico, is capitalizing on an invitation to speak at the conference a writer from Los Angeles to hang a few days off "with her husband, Scot Larrabee.
When Shaun Seufert, a spokesman for AAA Western and Central New York, asked to be in a wedding in Burlington, Vermont this fall, he decided to build a trip around it.
Tired of staycations? How about taking a slash "?"You can save money on a vacation without staying at home - a trip spreading the work or family event in the break you might not get otherwise.
"I think people have always wanted to find ways to make the most of a trip, whether business or family event," said Michelle Coville of Liberty Travel in Syracuse. "But I think it's really a good idea to bring to light now because it is a way to help people stretch their dollars."
If the trend was staycations main travel caused by the recession, the slant may be a good way to resume springing a few extra days in a hotel or a little more dinners out.
Coville travel planners and others suggest that, rather than having a mandatory trip to get in the way of a "real" vacation, consider it a chance to broaden your horizons. You can not have chosen the destination, but if life brings you here, you may as well take the time to see the sights.
Seufert said he takes this approach to the wedding of his friend in Burlington, October 2.He and his wife plan to start the trip with a visit to Utica native Seufert before driving to Vermont for the wedding, he said.
"So we will stay in Burlington a few days and check the city, then we go to two hours across the border to Montreal, because none of us has ever been there and it presents an ideal opportunity to travel," has he said.
As Seufert, Kathy Simons has a job related travel, as a bookkeeper for Tickets & Tours Pulaski.Every summer, it takes two trips - a business trip to attend the conference on software from Phoenix and the other a week's holiday in Portland with her husband, Mike, and their daughter, Sarah. This year, she found the only way she could make the trip affordable family was to combine it with the way to work, she said.
"When I started to price round-trip flight to Portland, it was really bad - $ 700 per person," she said. "So it costs $ 425 to fly round trip to Phoenix in August. Then I discovered that I could get a ticket that allows me to fly from Syracuse to Phoenix, Phoenix and Portland in Portland to Syracuse - a so-called "open jaw" in the travel biz - for only $ 525 . Because my company will pay my $ 425 ticket to Phoenix and back, my ticket to Portland costs me only $ 100 more. So it works really cheaper to take my family to the conference with me to just fly to Portland and back.
