Who is in the news?
* Davenport West High School alumni Dennis Shippey has been inducted into the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame.
Shippey graduated in 1965 from West, where he was a state champion in the breaststroke. He still holds swimming records at West. He was inducted into the Iowa High School Swimming Hall of Fame in 1996.
In 1976, he became swim coach at Pasadena ISD High School in Texas, retiring in 2001.
Shippey still swam competitively, placing in the top 10 in 18 individual events and 13 relays in the master’s division.
He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2001 and retired from swimming in 2008. He resides in a long-term care facility in the Houston area.
* This year’s commencement speaker at Palmer College of Chiropractic will be Henry Brockington III, a faculty member for 33 years who will retire on June 30.
Palmer’s commencement ceremonies will be 1 p.m. Friday in Vickie Anne Palmer Hall auditorium, 7th and Brady streets, Davenport. Doctor of chiropractic graduates are Jacquellyn Carter, Eldridge, Iowa; Amanda Holman and Melody Mosenfelder, both of Davenport, Michael Lane, Bettendorf; Amy Neff, Blue Grass, Iowa; Carla Sullivan, Rock Island, and Anna Walden, Orion, Ill.

This is one of the happiest events we sponsor during the year. Last night, more than 50 college-bound high school students from around the Quad Cities met donors who established scholarship funds and received $275,000 in scholarships. Our scholarship reception was held in Bettendorf at the Lodge.
