Expect hot racing from Cape Classics

In one way, Western Province Motorsport has been the victim of its own success; there are now so many classes that not all of them can be accommodated in a race-day programme, so at every meeting one class has to take a bye.

At this weekend's fifth round of the Western Province Regional series that dubious honour falls to the Superbikes, which means the so-called Cinderella classes - the Powersports, Vintage Superbikes, Battle of the Twins and Class D machines - get to take centre stage.

And they can be relied upon to put on quite a show.

Most of the Vintage Superbike and Twins riders are adults (in years if not in temperament) who grew up in the 1970s and '80s with these overweight, underbraked Big Guns and understand their foibles. They're also experienced riders who know the lines around Killarney's admittedly bumpy corners and will use them to the best advantage.

Fastest of them are likely to be Tony Sparg, on a very neat Suzuki GSX1100, and John "Konstabel" Kosterman's Honda CB1100 RC. Each of these bikes was in its time a watershed for its maker. The GSX1100 was Suzuki's first litre-class machine with four valves per cylinder, housed in a cylinder head so complex in design its name was emblazoned on the bike's side cover: Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber.

The CB1100RC was, by contrast, the first street-legal Honda to be built in the HRC racing shop specifically to win production-class races. A true homologation special, it boasted a handmade alloy fuel-tank, adjustable suspension and 85kW - more than many premier-class GP bikes of the time.

Thirty years on, they may be dinosaurs, but they're still intimidatingly quick in a straight line.

By contrast the riders of the Powersport machines are mostly teenagers who learned to ride in the dirt, where riding accurately on the same line lap after lap will only slow you down as the bike cuts a rut in the track.

They ride by the seat of their pants because that's the only way they know how and, convinced of their own immortality, they'll happily go for a gap that isn't there, stuffing their little 400cc four-stroke and 250cc two-stoke machines down the inside in overtaking moves that'll make you catch your breath in disbelief.

Watch out for 12-year-old Hayden Jonas on the Bizhub RS125 (the last Grand Prix machine still running in the Cape) and Derek Hendricks on the Bikers Delight CBR400, with Ashley Aldridge (who's old enough to know better) always a danger on the Ukasa VFR400.
