Q: My daughter, who is out of state, has a problem with her 2002 Ford F-150 Regular cab pickup 4x4 with automatic transmission. It has a little over 100,000 miles. Recently, it has developed a rather severe vibration when driven at speeds between 55 and 65. There is no sign of vibration below 55 or above 65, just within that speed range. It sounds like some sort of resonance, but I can't be sure. I asked if she felt it just in the steering wheel and she said no, the whole truck was shaking. She will take it to a mechanic but wants to have some idea of what the issues might be. Thanks for your help.

A: That's a great question, and at the same time a very common problem. The good part is it is an easily diagnosed problem. The diagnosis takes place on an automotive lift, with all four wheels off the ground. When the vehicle is secured in place, have the mechanic take a look at the drive shaft while it is spinning in the air. In most cases with your 2002 Ford F-150, that is where the problem is going to be. One of the problems that we have run into is that the universal joints are not serviceable in some applications, which makes the drive shaft a throwaway item. If by chance the drive shaft checks out good, each of the four wheels should be put onto a balancer. If it takes more than an hour to diagnose this problem, someone is sleeping on the job.

Q: I have a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder with a 3.5-liter engine that has been into the service shop many times due to excessively loud squealing when the vehicle is started, especially in cold, wet conditions. The dealer has not been able to duplicate the noises but has lubricated the pulleys, changed the belts and supposedly done everything possible to help the situation, but it only helps for a day or two. The squealing does go away after the vehicle runs for anywhere from 10 seconds to over a minute. It is minimized if the air conditioner or heater is in the off position. This has been happening for quite some time and seems to be getting worse. Do you have any suggestions? (The vehicle has 86,000 miles on it.

Make sure your HVAC system is totally shut down before you start your engine so you don't get AC compressor drag. Lastly and very important is the fact that your car runs an inner belt for the power steering, which is adjustable.

A/C compressor squealing after recharge

I picked up a can of ez chill because i had no refrigerant at all. my cherokee is a 97 so it was already made for 134A not freon, so i did all the work really simple and all, the next day i turned ac on MAX and a very obnoxious squealing noise occured, i can guarantee you its not my serpentine belt, it ONLY happens when the AC compressor clutch engages, with AC off its perfect, no squealing, so is it a bad bearing or something? do i need to replace the whole compressor unit? or just the bearing? remember, this only happens when the AC in ON, otherwise there are no noises, i dont have any leaks either. thanks I picked up a can of ez chill because i had no refrigerant at all. my cherokee is a 97 so it was already made for 134A not freon, so i did all the work really simple and all, the next day i turned ac on MAX and a very obnoxious squealing noise occured, i can guarantee you its not my serpentine belt, it ONLY happens when the AC compressor clutch engages, with AC off its perfect, no squealing, so is it a bad bearing or something? do i need to replace the whole compressor unit? or just the bearing? remember, this only happens when the AC in ON, otherwise there are no noises, i dont have any leaks either. thanks Leon, just so you know 134a is also freon. I think you were refering it to not being R-12. But anyway, either your belt is shot, the tensioner is not tight enough, or the clutch is going bad on the compressor. You have to tighten up these belts SUPER tight in order to get rid of the noise. Just don't overtighten or else you'll put too much strain on the bearings of the other parts. With having no freon in it, you definatley have a leak somewhere since you don't "use" freon like you use gas. It's a sealed system and will work forever with the original charge as long as there is never a leak. Find someone reputable to leak check it for you so you don't keep dumping cans of freon in it. It gets expensive after a while. I agree with the Evap. Common XJ problem. I had to do mine as well. Do yourself a favor and have the heater core done at the same time since you're in there already. Good luck man.
