Lakewood karate school to feature anti-bullying all day summer camps

We have all heard the horrific stories about bullying in the news.  It is clear the effect of being the victim of bullying has negatively affected the lives of so many of our precious children and young adults.  Statistics show that adults who were bullied as children have higher levels of depression and lower self esteem.  160,000 kids miss school every day because they live in fear of a bully.

As a middle school nurse, many times a day I see kids who have been a victim of bullying.  Mostly the children’s feelings are hurt from verbal or mental abuse.  However, there are many fights involving both boys and girls.  I am the person who must make sure the child is physically ok and make a determination on whether they should see a doctor.  It is heart breaking to say the least to see a young child in distress, but even more so when they didn’t do anything to incite the abuse.  There are anti-bullying rules at school.  However, because there is no budget, children are not trained in the techniques they need to handle a bullying incident.  I am a parent of two young children and I want them to be safe at school.  Since I cannot be with them during school, I want them to be trained to handle a bullying incident to the best of their ability.  The Lakewood karate dojo has a program that fulfills my parental need.

The Lakewood karate dojo has been producing champions of karate for decades.  Since the mid nineties, members of this prestigious school have been dominating local, regional, and national competitions.  Many have earned spots on the USA National karate team and have represented the USA in international competitions all over the world.  More noticeably, this organization has been the bright star in the community for developing the characters of our youth in an amazing way.  “Kids come here to learn karate”, says Sensei Chuck Sweigart, a fifth degree black belt and head instructor at the Lakewood Dojo “they think it’s all about kicking and punching, but they have no idea that a huge part of the training is designed to mold their moral fiber and to instill confidence.”  These qualities are vital in preventing a disturbing trend in the youth of today’s society.

The Lakewood Dojo is inviting children to attend a series of week long day camps that will focus on anti-bullying strategies.  Kids will learn to deal with bullying and peer pressure in a fun, safe, and productive environment.  Anti-bullying topics will also include how to be safe at school, on the street, on the internet, and most importantly how to handle the bully verbally, mentally, and physically.  Upon completion of these camps, the kids will never be the victim of a bully.
