New regulations, helmets help the cause

Concussion cases are on the rise, but across the four major sports debate rages on how to prevent them and limit their severity when they do occur.

Helmet-to-helmet hits in the NFL are outlawed and as far back as four years ago, league officials were told to eject players when such fouls occurred. However, punishment has been rare and harsher fines and penalties are just two of the measures being sought to curb such behavior.

"The rules of the game have been changed and modified to keep the players safe," said Southern Illinois University football coach Dale Lennon. "Helmet-to-helmet contact is being looked at to determine if there was intent and if it was vicious."

The NFL's checkered past on this subject - league commissioner Roger Goodell faced criticism in 2009 when he would not acknowledge a connection between head injuries on the field and brain diseases later in life - helped lead to a flurry of state laws being passed that set new concussion guidelines.

In Illinois, the IHSA approved a new policy in April that enhances safety precautions for high school athletes. The policy requires that any athlete who had been removed from competition for concussion symptoms be cleared by a licensed health care provider trained in the treatment of concussions and head injuries before returning to play.

The old policy, instituted in 2010, required an athlete that left a game with a head injury to be cleared by a doctor before returning. It did not require follow-up examinations to be conducted in the days following the injury as the new policy does.

"The more we learn about concussions, the more we realize the long-term effects of these injuries and how important follow-up is for student athletes," said IHSA executive director Marty Hickman.

The IHSA is also making changes to its equipment policy. Starting with the 2012-13 school year, football helmets older than 10 years will be rejected and unable to be used. A New York Times article in October 2010 showed that more than 100,000 helmets worn by youth players in 2009 were more than 10 years old and thousands more were 20 years old.

"There's a life period for a helmet and ours don't get past five (years)," Lennon said. "There is a lot of effort being put into player safety with helmet design."
