Wood shop classes disappearing in Inland area

Fewer high schools still offer wood shop classes, once a staple of American education.

At the Riverside County Industrial Education Expo last month at the Galleria at Tyler, students from San Jacinto High School and some Corona-Norco high schools displayed inlaid wood game tables, grandfather clocks, other tables and fine furniture they had made.

No schools from other districts were part of the exhibit.

Decades of declining enrollment is shop electives also have reduced the number of new teachers earning credentials for shop classes.

In 1987, three-quarters of California high school students were enrolled in a Career Technical Education course at their campus, the California Industrial and Technology Education Association said on its website. Last year, only 29 percent were able to take such a course at their high school.

Enrollment in Career Technical Education courses dipped 15 percent from 1997-98 to 2004-05, the state association said.

Many school districts, such as Riverside Unified, no longer even have high school shop classes. The only shop class left in that district is at Gage Middle School.

High school students have fewer optional electives.

"The single biggest issue is driven by academic rigor and accountability," North High's longtime Principal Dale Kinnear said.

Students who hope to go to four-year colleges load up their schedules with academic courses for admissions requirements. They may take psychology and a third or fourth year of foreign language for their electives.

Other students with no plans for a four-year college may be required to double up on English and math classes to pass the California High School Exit Examination, Kinnear said.

Classes such as shop enrich students but won't help them prepare for careers today, said Larry Sharp, vice president for advancement at Cal State San Bernardino.

"The new blue-collar jobs require more technology," Sharp said.

Instead of using workers standing behind shovels, earth-movers now use GPS technology to grade dirt, he said.

Construction classes

The Riverside County Office of Education doesn't offer the wood shop classes of yore but does have construction technology classes, said Tracey Vackar, project coordinator for Career Technical Education. Students usually work on major carpentry projects, such as helping Habitat for Humanity build homes.
