Rakarebel remains undefeated in Australia

Hall has set his sights on big races, including the Fremantle Cup and WA Pacing Cup, for Rakarebel, who maintained his unbeaten record in Australia when he gave a superb frontrunning exhibition to win the All States Fruit And Veg Merchants Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night (june 24).

Rakarebel managed only six wins from 64 starts in New Zealand before entering Hall's Hazelmere stables two months ago. Now Rakarebel has been untroubled to win at his first five appearances at Gloucester Park and he looks set to continue his rapid climb to the top.

Hall set Rakarebel a serious challenge on Friday night. He gave the M0-class pacer the task of competing against nine horses with vastly superior records. His rivals were classified M3 to M8 --- and he emerged with flying colours.

Starting an even-money favourite in the 2503m stand, and driven with great confidence by Gary Hall jun., Rakarebel set the pace and strolled to a two-length victory over stablemate Davy Maguire (11/1), with Rocket Reign (11/2) sustaining a spirited burst from the rear to be a half-length away in third place.

Hall sen., a keen student of New Zealand form, has long been an admirer of Rakarebel, but his offer to purchase him about 18 months ago was unsuccessful. However, he was able to clinch the deal two months ago and the gelding is now owned by Beth Richardson, Glen Moore, Andrew Curran, Karen Hall and John Burt.

Friday night's race was run in heavy rain and the track was waterlogged. However, it made no difference to Rakarebel who sprinted the final 800m in 57.9sec. He rated 2.3.7.

Davy Maguire fought on gamely after enjoying the run of the race behind the pacemaker, while Rocket Reign continued his excellent form for his new trainer Justin Warwick by finishing solidly. Im Percy The Punter, who raced in the breeze, wilted to fourth.

Alkira Jetstar the start of a winning streak for Lewis

Grey filly Alkira Jetstar continued on her winning ways with a commanding performance in the Mercer Mooney Fruit And Veg Merchants Pace at Gloucester Park on Friday night to give reinsman Chris Lewis the first leg of a winning double.

Thirty minutes later Lewis guided Cillas Earl to victory in the Galati Brothers Fruit And Veg Merchants Trot, and then at Gloucester Park on Saturday night Lewis continued in grand form with four winners, all prepared by leading trainer Ross Olivieri.

His winners on Saturday night were Tightrope, Cinderella Man, Melbournian and Goldfields Girl (who dead-heated with Astro Midge). Those four winners took his total for the season to 171 and he looks certain to exceed the milestone of 200 winners in a season.

Laminitis (founder); Who Do You Beleive?

It’s funny how a person can work his tail off for over thirty one years in an industry that is highly competitive (and very fickle) and manage to make a living helping a lot of horses, along the way and still be derided by so called ‘professionals’ just because he doesn’t have a DVM or a PhD after his name.

I must remind readers that in no way am I ‘anti-vet’ or against higher education. Without the great strides that have been made in academia, we would have none of the products or the procedures that allow us to care for and treat our horses when they need help. I have a very good relationship with my vet and her staff. I regularly consult with a number of vets across the country and manufacture custom premixes for vets and feed companies alike.

Yet, out of the blue, I have a vet that seems to be on a mission to discredit everything that I say or do over the articles that I have written and published to educate horse owners of their options. And I might point out that I have done so for free . Worst of all he chose to do it in a public forum rather than contact me and confront me directly.

Over the years I have been asked to help with cases that have a nutritional base for their existence and have written articles on the sugar and starch (NSC) content of hay and the impact that different cereal grains have on horses. To date I have never written an article on ‘founder’ but the problem that I seem to have today stems from that perception.

The reason for writing this article is to demonstrate how convoluted information gets in today’s age of the “information hi-way”. We all have to remember that the access to misinformation many times overshadows the access to credible information. Albeit emotional diatribe, Dr. Throgmorton has accused me of the adding to the same misinformation that is common on the internet, simply because he did not bother to read my articles thoroughly or investigate the cited references (short of ridiculing them) before attacking me and my associates.

Dr. Bill Throgmorton of Gilroy, CA initially posted this with regard to my article “But He Likes It” posted on Article Base ( http://www.articlesbase.com/nutrition-articles/but-he-likes-it-215460.html )

1. B. Throgmorton,DVM (17:14, 31.03.2009)

Evidently you have not ridden endurance or competitive horses in competition. If you had, you would quickly see the facillacy in your argument. Number 1, horses use short chair fatty acids as their primary energy source during prolong physical activity. You should clarify which group of horses your article covers, (the sedate, back yard, used only on Sunday by old maid school teacher). I can tell from first hand experience, having Judged competitive and endurance rides for 40 years and having competed along with family members, horses on strickly grass hay will srink like a wilted lilly. Unless you supplement their hay with grain which will raise there carbohydrate level and available sugers.
