Nichols Park has new, accessible playground equipment

As Nichols Park draws many for an Independence Day celebration, a new, permanent playground fixture is opening for the first time.

With the combined efforts of the Jacksonville Pilot Club and city Parks and Lakes Department, the park now features playground equipment accessible to children with disabilities.

Barb Baker, Pilot Club grant writer, said the playground has been put together and is opening for use this weekend.

Every year the Pilot Club works with different organizations to provide a matching grant for local projects.

“Looking at the city of Jacksonville, it has so many good parks, and there are so many children who use Nichols Park. It seemed like a logical place to try to enhance the playground area,” she said.

Parks and Lake Superintendent Bruce Surratt said several pieces of equipment at the Nichols Park Playground was provided by past Pilot Club projects.

“The Pilot Club has been like our big sisters for years and years. They’ve always helped us a lot,” Surratt said. “It always seems we have to spend our money on mowing equipment and weed-eating equipment. We don’t get around to the playground equipment.”

While there is other Americans with Disabilities Act-certified equipment at Minnie Barr Park, this will be the first for Nichols Park.

The new playground equipment  features a ramp, specially designed steps that ease mobility when climbing and specially designed parts to prevent injury.

Last year, the Pilot Club’s annual grant was used to buy several pieces interactive equipment for autistic students at Washington School. It also funded part of the Play for All Park in Godfrey park.

If i had a theory for movement, i would say that Eath moves big every 10K years or thereabouts. Or it moves big enough to erase civilizations and then “start over” is the option. Everyone starts over. If you are a hiearchal you will consider your status to be “God Given” and won’t want to start over or lose the coveted position of “famous or high and mighty”. Right now what we live our lives around is Hierarchy trying to stabilize the surface.
