Ankeny school district updates science curriculum

Curriculum review

Ankeny school administrators and teachers are in the midst of a multi-year project to update classroom goals and materials. Subjects are reviewed during one school year, with any new texts, materials and classes offered in the next year or two.
2008-09: Reviewed math, art, modern language, guidance and teacher/librarian programs.
2009-10: Language arts, including technology skills; business education; family and consumer science; and industrial technology.
2010-11: Science, physical education and health.
2011-12: Social studies and music.

Courses offered in Ankeny schools will include honors programs for students in middle school and high school.

Updates to the Ankeny school district's science curriculum will build on ongoing efforts to improve students' reading, writing and speaking skills, administrators said at Monday's board meeting.

Dana Schon, executive director of elementary education, said teachers' work during the last school year to review Ankeny's science offerings took inspiration from the literacy goals that emphasize critical thinking and evaluating ideas.

"It integrates the work we've done," she said.

The district is in the midst of a multi-year project to update every area of curriculum, revise lesson plans and expand the variety of courses offered. The final round of reviews - social studies and music - will be during the upcoming school year.

Health and physical education programs were reviewed during the 2010-11 year along with science. The board is expected to approve the updates at its July 11 meeting. Changes to texts and materials for all of those areas, along with some new science classes, will start in August.

Jen Lindaman, executive director of secondary education, said the district's three areas of science programs continue to be life, physical, and earth and space. Officials are not going with just one company for all the next texts, she said, but rather choosing publishers with the strongest offerings in each of those three areas.

A selection of kindergarten through fifth-grade classrooms will test a new version of science materials during the 2011-12 year, with implementation the following year.
