RTP is a Cultural and Traditional Advisors forum that is open to the

public. Visiting Advisors from southern Saskatchewan First Nations share

their personal insight and cultural experiences, preserving Aboriginal

oral history.

The main goal of this initiative is to invite Advisors from different

areas of Saskatchewan to share their knowledge and perspective on

traditional teachings. Two Advisors, ideally a female and a male, will

be invited twice a semester to come and share traditional teachings and

knowledge through stories, sharing circles, and group or individual

sessions. Inviting Advisors who represent different First Nations and

regions allows us to reach out to students who may be from that region.

Students also have the opportunity to learn about different customs and

practices from neighboring communities and First Nations.

First Nations people are a people of oral history. Passing on this

knowledge allows students to listen and learn and reconnect with

traditional teachings. It also provides a service that students can

access while attending the University of Regina.

Inviting Advisors from different First Nations and tribes allows for

Advisors to have a dialogue with each other. They are able to learn

about the different nations’ traditional practices, better

understanding, and sharing of knowledge. Each nation has its own

practices, there is no one right way to traditional teachings and being

able to exchange this knowledge opens the doors for two-way

understanding and respect.

This educational initiative is beneficial in many ways for the

Aboriginal student body. Students are able to interact with Advisors and

learn different teachings from them. If guidance or counseling is

needed, the student can access it from an ASC Advisor or the guest

Advisor. Sometimes students just need a safe place to talk, and during

these sessions they will be able to share within a group setting, or a

one-on-one session with the Advisor they feel most comfortable with.
