Dear Neil: I have dollar weed in my yard. It's a low-growing that is shaped like a silver dollar. I tried spraying it with a weedkiller labeled for it, but it didn't do any good. Where can I turn?

Answer: You used the correct product. The problem in treating dollar weed comes from both the shape and surface of the leaves. They act like funnels to guide sprays off the leaves, and the very glossy leaf surfaces speed that along. You need to include a drop of liquid dishwashing detergent with each gallon of spray you mix, and you need to apply it with a pump sprayer that allows you to deliver a reasonably fine mist that will coat the leaves.

Dear Neil: We live in a rental house, so I need some inexpensive options. We have been picking up tree leaves since we moved in; we've filled 48 large bags already. The ground is bare, and there is almost no sunlight. What kind of inexpensive groundcover can I get? I'm not picky enough to want lawngrass. I just want something so our dog won't kick up dust and mud.

Answer: I'm not sure there will be a good solution to all your needs. Grass is always the best, easiest and most affordable plant to cover bare ground. All of our other groundcovers must be planted from transplants, either dug or potted, and they all need good bed preparation prior to planting. Perhaps you can find someone wanting to get rid of a bed of mondograss who will let you have it for the digging. Bark mulch is good for pathways, and it might work for a larger area, but it will wash when we do get heavy rains. You have an impasse, because all of our grasses have to have at least 4 or 5 hours of sunlight to grow. For the winter, at least, you could consider planting ryegrass in mid-September for cool-season cover.

Dear Neil: About six years ago, I bought bulbs of Peruvian daylilies. The first year, they bloomed well, and they have grown well ever since. But, no more flowers. I keep them fertilized and watered, but I'd like to know what I'm missing.

Answer: I'm going to have to hand this back to you for clarification. Peruvian daffodils are fairly common in Texas gardens. They are Hymenocallis narcissiflora, and they bloom from bulbs, with large, spidery white flowers. Peruvian lilies are alstroemerias. They are very common florist flowers in shades of orange, red, gold, white and lavender. However, they're not very common in Texas gardens. Hopefully just having the genus names will help you in doing a little online research. If they turn out to be Peruvian daffodils, you might try digging and dividing them this October. Reset the bulbs into moist, well-prepared garden soil. Morning sun with afternoon shade would be ideal.
