Wharf busy place on landing day

NORTHPORT – Northside fishing ports were beehives of activity Thursday as spring lobster fishermen brought their gear to shore.

Thursday was the final day of the season – landing day – and only so many boats could line up to unload at one time.

But they all had to offload their gear in a hurry so that they could get back out and retrieve the rest of their traps.

A variety of means were employed to get the traps off the boats and off the wharfs. Manpower was popular but so were the small craft harbours winches.

One fisherman had a winch mounted to his truck, which quickly lifted traps out of the boat and some fishers, whether they used winches or manpower, stacked their traps onto pallets and then used forklifts to load them onto trailers. Getting the traps off at home would be just as simple.

The front-end loader on a tractor had five hooks attached, allowing five traps to be lifted out of a boat at a time. The snowblower mounted on the back was there only for weight distribution.

The season ended with calm seas and an improvement in price, but many captains were suggesting their landings were about 25 per cent lower than last season.
