Q: Do homeopathic treatments have any value?

A: Dr. Stephen Barrett, a physician, author, editor and consumer advocate who received an FDA Commissioner’s Special Citation Award for Public Service in fighting nutrition quackery, has labeled homeopathy as the ultimate fake.

  He notes that homeopathy dates back to the late 1700s, when Samuel Hahnemann began formulating its basic principles. Hahnemann was justifiably distressed about bloodletting, leaching, purging and other medical practices of his day that did more harm than good. Hahnemann declared that diseases represent a disturbance in the body’s ability to heal itself and that only a small stimulus is needed to begin the healing process. At first, he used small doses of acceptable medications. Later, however, he used enormous dilutions, thinking that the smaller the dose, the more powerful the effect.

  He also believed that substances that produce a certain set of symptoms in a healthy person can cure those symptoms in someone who is sick. For example, arsenic, a known poison, can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea in a healthy person. Hahnemann and his followers believed that if something like arsenic was tremendously diluted (a pill or liquid preparation with possibly only a single molecule of arsenic), that preparation could be used to treat nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. He was correct in the fact that the preparation with just that single molecule of a substance could have little if any side effects. This was important in his day, since the side effects of common treatments of that period, bloodletting and purging, were significant. For critics of this theory, who rightly claimed that a single molecule of a substance could have no effect, homeopathic providers claim that the water used to dilute the substance has “memory,” which, of course, has never been proven. They claim that vigorous shaking of the molecules and the water during the dilution process allows this “memory” to be imparted into the water.

  Today, homeopathic remedies are available in health-food stores and, sadly, even in pharmacies, alongside real medicines that have had to prove their effectiveness. These preparations are usually in the form of pills that claim to treat everything from nervousness and swollen feet to menstrual cramps, flu and even babies' teething problems. These pills are often sugar tablets with a single drop of the greatly diluted solution placed on them. The container for these pills will list the molecule of the herb, mineral or even tissue such as duck heart or liver (Occillococcinun) and the dilution, if one could understand or grasp that fact.

Stomach flu or gastroenteritis is a pathological disturbance of the gastrointestinal tract, which includes irritation of the stomach and the small intestine. It is also referred to as intestinal flu. Generally, it is caused by viral infection; other causes include infection by bacteria, parasites, and biotoxins (toxins produced by organisms).

Stomach Flu: Symptoms

Symptoms of stomach flu depend upon the type of casual organism. However, its major symptom is diarrhea. Gastroenteritis may be viral or bacterial. In viral, a patient suffers from frequent watery stools, whereas bacterial stomach flu is characterized by blood in the stools. Some people may suffer from vomiting along with diarrhea. Other symptoms may include nausea, headache, fever, loss of appetite, weight loss, and abdominal pain, inflammation of the colon (colitis) and large intestine. In children the most notable signs are fatigue, low fever, dehydration, pale skin color, and dark eye circles.

Diagnosis of gastroenteritis is done by physical examination and other lab tests. In order to confirm stomach flu, stool analysis is done to test the presence of pathogens, white blood cells and food toxins.

Stomach Flu: Remedies

Stomach flu may last for an average of about 2-4 days. There is no cure for stomach flu; the best way is to take rest until one feels better. However, there are certain home remedies that can be followed to shorten the duration of stomach flu.
