Anderson & Roe Duo Among Piano Festival Highlights

Pushing boundaries with their music makes it relevant to their audiences, the pianists say. They met while students at Juilliard and have performed together for a decade, touring North America and also performing on television and radio programs ranging from MTV to NPR. They appeal particularly to audiences of young adults like themselves, a demographic seemingly drifting away from traditional classical music.  In their choreographed performance of Libertango by Astor Piazzolla, they share one piano, alternately standing and sitting close, their arms tangled in a passionate and seductive interplay. They jam in their arrangement of Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” with their hands flying. Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring is raw and rough; at times all four hands are piled within 11 notes of each other. As they develop their own arrangements of music, or play another’s, they say they think not just of the sound, but also of the experience.  They find themselves singing it in the shower or driving in a car. They immerse themselves in the history of the piece, the conditions it was created, and the strengths and weaknesses of the instrumentation.  And they even style their on-stage dress to match the music’s mood.  All of that makes it personal to them so they can in turn make it personal for their audiences. “What we’re doing is actually nothing that damages the music or that hinders its communicative power; rather the opposite,” says Roe.  “Our intentions have always been very pure. We love to have fun and we love to try new things and I think people respond to that and they embrace it because they can tell that there’s a certain honesty and authenticity to what we do.” “I think the blend of tradition and innovation is something that progress is all about,” says Marina Lomazov, the founder of the Southeastern Piano Festival, of Anderson/Roe. “This is a living art.  This is a performing art form. To be relevant to future generations, you have to constantly re-invent yourself. You can’t stand still. In addition to Anderson & Roe, the festival will also feature duo pianists Angela Cheng and Alvin Chow from Oberlin College, as well as 2006 Hilton Head International Competition Winner Dmitri Levkovich and 2006 Arthur Fraser International Concerto Competition Sejoon Park.
