Hair-razing: Curator taking it off to aid collection

The hair is long and silky with a natural curl and subtle highlights that developed without the aid of any chemical.

When worn in a ponytail, the strands are 14 inches in length. They've been growing nearly two years, and their owner has enjoyed them.

But Alan Gehret is ready to sacrifice them for something he loves far more than his hair -- the vast and priceless collection of paintings, prints, journals, documents and other items in the collection of Audubon Memorial Museum here.

Alan, curator for nearly six years of the world class facility in Audubon State Park, has, with park and museum staff, embarked on a campaign to preserve each potentially perishable piece.

That conservation effort won't be cheap. In fact, Alan estimates it will cost from $500,000 to $750,000 to have the works cleaned and repaired by specialists in Philadelphia and Nashville.

The idea is to persuade members of the public to "adopt" individual pieces and pay for conservation of whatever item the "adopter" chooses. Costs are expected to range from about $100 for preservation of a small print to maybe $2,000 for a major oil painting.

Those who don't want to commit that much are urged to donate whatever they can to the effort.

What about Alan's hair?

His initial, very reachable goal, is to raise $1,200 as a starting point for the conservation of two prints.

When that amount is reached, and Alan thinks it will be soon, he's going to have his hair cut short by a local hairdresser in a place where the public can view the clipping: The glass-fronted studio of radio station WSON in downtown Henderson.

He thinks it would be great if local salons and barbershops had a bit of competition among themselves to raise money for the conservation project. The shop that raised the most could have one of their hairdressers do the honors with the scissors.

The length of hair is being donated either to the national Locks of Love program or a similar program in Kentucky. Both provide human-hair wigs for children who have lost their hair because of a chronic medical condition.

Alan initially let his hair grow in order to portray legendary wildlife painter John James Audubon during last year's bicentennial celebration of Audubon's arrival in Henderson, where he and his family resided until 1819.

His hair-cutting inspiration came from Audubon himself, who was convinced by an engraver that he needed to cut his hair for a portrait that was done in England in 1826.
