ABC's Thursday Premieres Win the Night Among Adults 18-49, Scoring The ...

With the premiere of its Thursday summer lineup ("Wipeout"/"Expedition Impossible"/"Rookie Blue"), ABC finished No. 1 on the night in Adults 18-49 (2.1/6), towering over Fox by 40% (1.5/5), CBS by 50% (1.4/4) and NBC by 163% (0.8/2).  In a rare feat for a new series, ABC's "Expedition Impossible" debuted as the night's No. 1 TV show, tying ABC's "Wipeout."  At 8:00 p.m., ABC's summer premiere of "Wipeout" catapulted over its 2-night-ago Tuesday sneak peek in viewers (+42% - 7.5 million vs. 5.3 million) and young adults (+35% - 2.3/8 vs. 1.7/6).  The broad-appealing ABC unscripted series won its time period by wide margins, beating Fox's original "So You Think You Can Dance" (6.3 million and 1.9/7) by 1.2 million viewers and 21% in Adults 18-49.    Opening as Thursday's No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49 (2.3/7), ABC's debut of "Expedition Impossible" retained 100% of its "Wipeout" lead-in to dominate its rivals in the 9 o'clock hour.  Making it a clean sweep in the time slot, the new ABC unscripted show premiered as the No. 1 series across all key Adult demos (AD18-34/AD18-49/AD25-54) and was the top-rated broadcast program with Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11. * Despite moving into a later time period (shifting from 9:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.) with lower overall TV usage, ABC's "Rookie Blue" drew the series' largest audience since mid-August last year in viewers and since early-August in young adults - since 8/19/10 and 8/5/10, respectively.  In addition, "Rookie Blue" hit a series high with Women 18-34 (1.6/5-tie). * "Rookie Blue" produced strong year-over-year gains for ABC in the hour with viewers (+16%) and young adults (+23%), topping original programming on the year-ago night ("Boston Med" = 5.1 million and 1.3/4).  In fact with viewers and young adults, "Rookie Blue" posted ABC's best summer numbers in the hour with regular programming since August 2008 - since 8/7/08. A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 41% currently, from 36% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.
