Fisher driver competes in Top Truck Challenge

FISHER, Minn. — The future custom rig doesn’t look like much now. The buggy sits in a workshop, a mass of rusty metal tubes welded together into a jeep-like frame. As yet, there is no motor, no wheels, no seats, no steering wheel.

But, outside the shop on the Wald brothers’ farm, there is a glimpse of what the finished product will look like. Shane Vizenor calls his finished buggy “Lil Nasty” — a bright-green painted two-seat vehicle with a powerful engine, big shocks and huge wheels, 54 inches high and 20 inches wide. Vizenor built Lil Nasty, and it is the Fisher resident's claim to fame.

Vizenor recently returned from California, where he was one of five drivers nationwide who were selected to compete in the buggy division of Top Truck Challenge, sponsored by the magazine Four Wheeler. The challenge was a series of seven off-road contests that tested the strength and skills of both vehicle and driver. The 44-year-old Vizenor finished third.

“I actually had the competition won,” Vizenor said. “But my driving style is pretty fast and aggressive. On the last event, I was too aggressive and wound up flipping my vehicle and finishing last. That dropped me to third overall.

“It is a rush to get through an obstacle course. You get done and you want to just scream and yell. It’s a huge adrenaline rush.”

The road to California

Getting to California and the Top Truck Challenge was a selection process.

Vizenor submitted his entry in a nationwide contest. The magazine then selected the top 50 in both the buggy (custom rigs completely fabricated by owners from the ground up) and truck class (vehicles based off an existing vehicle). “Their selection was based on things like motors, vehicle durability, things they considered would work in the events,” Vizenor said.

From there, magazine readers voted on the final 50 nationwide to narrow the field to five. Then the competition began, with little room for error.

“You have one run in each event,” Vizenor said. “There definitely is a nerve factor there. There is driving skill required, trying to do the right things. You can’t just go in and hammer down the throttle.”

The events included an uphill tow, in which the buggy pulled a loaded 66,000-pound cement truck up a hill, with drivers getting points for the farthest pull. Most of the other events involved speed and the ability to navigate vehicles through obstacle courses filled with boulders, logs, mud and water.
