Dining Scouts: A three-stop tour of freshness, flavor
The Bee's Dining Scouts are Marlene Chernev of Fair Oaks and Miki Vohryzek-Bolden of Sacramento. They're experienced, enthusiastic and discerning diners who report occasionally on their experiences with Sacramento's dining world. The Bee's Blair Anthony Robertson is taking the day off.
Café Capricho
Tucked into the trendy blocks of Folsom Boulevard that also feature Star Ginger, 33rd Street Bistro and Mr. Pickles is Café Capricho (3269 Folsom Blvd.), which offers primarily central Mexican food with some American options.
The owners, Marina and Ed Winchester, have created a wonderful family-run neighborhood cafe that complements the other eateries in the area.
We ordered the black bean-and-cheese quesadilla ($3.25 for two) and spinach-and-cheese quesadilla ($3.99 for two) with an option of flour or corn tortillas. Both dishes were plentiful, filling and very tasty.
The three other dishes were more representative of the restaurant's cuisine carnitas dinner plate with rice, beans, sour cream, pico de gallo, and guacamole ($8.99); chile relleno with cheese, currants, pine nuts, roasted poblano sauce with almonds, whole beans and quinoa or white rice ($9.25); and quinoa salad with dried cranberries, fuji apple and pecans over a bed of mixed greens with berry vinaigrette ($6.95).
All of the sauces and dressing are homemade.
The creative combinations of ingredients and flavors set this cafe apart from many Mexican restaurants. And it is not fast food the dishes are prepared to order.
Overall, the prices are reasonable, the food is fabulous and it's a nice addition to the neighborhood.

High Hand Conservatory
The 3,000-square-foot glass conservatory provides a beautiful setting with a stunning view of an adjoining nursery.
High Hand Conservatory (3750 Taylor Road, Loomis) is open for lunch Wednesday through Friday, dinner on Friday and Saturday, and brunch on weekends.
One of the first things we noted about the lunch and dinner menu was the creative combination of flavors.
Several examples include olives with fennel seed and orange zest, lemon grass prawns with spicy daikon radish slaw, grilled ham with fiscalini cheddar cheese and fig jam, and shrimp with carrot and radish slaw and Sriracha spread.
Chef Randy Kliewer, who has had stints at the Resort at Squaw Creek and David Berkley Fine Wines & Specialty Foods, said the goal when High Hand opened in 2008 was to create a dining experience to complement the nursery to which it is attached farm fresh and made from scratch.

As we try to remove the grease stains from our mock-ups, we might recall that it was on this date in 1867 that Lucien B. Smith patented barbed wire (U.S. No. 66,182). Eventually competitors produced more than 1,500 different types of barbed wire; but Smith’s patent gave him pride of invention.. His simple idea that was an artificial “thorn hedge” consisting of wire with short metal spikes twisted on by hand at regular intervals. For prairie farmers and cattlemen natural fencing materials were scarce, so the invention gave them an accessible way keep their cattle safely away from crops. It also created tensions between farmers and ranchers: inexpensive barbed wire allowed farmers to fence in their fields, preventing ranchers’ livestock from feeding off of the farmers’ fields, and making it more difficult for cattle drives to cross farmers’ lands. Ultimately ranchers too recognized the benefits of fencing their herds… and the days of the open range came to an end.
