The Lion Heart meet included only bench and deadlift events, with male and female competitors ranging in age from 15 to 72. Those who were breaking state and world raw APA records ranged as well, from 15-year-old Michael Berube and 16-year-old Kim Smith to Leon Barry and Robert Nussear, ages 70 and 72, respectively. Byer cleared two of the rooms of his gym and pumped in extra air conditioning for the 80 or so people who showed up to watch and participate in the event. Byer does, however, train other people in powerlifting. One of his favorite stories is that of 52-year-old Peggy Haimbaugh who came to him with bone density issues, but wanted to work out. After training at bodybuilding, she asked Byer if he could train her powerlifting in time of a meet two months away.
